Solidification during the planar flow casting of crystalline ribbons has been simulated. The transition from a planar microstructure to a dendritic microstructure has been related to the heat transfer coefficient and the nucleation temperature of the crystalline phase. In addition the influence of the melt puddle shape on the temperature distribution on the surface of the solidifying ribbon has been studied.
